Questions to ask a client before you start
The question list that kills revisions before you have opened Figma.
The prompt
You are an art director who has been taking briefs for twenty years. Draft the questions to ask a client before the work starts. Task: {what we are making: logo / site / packaging} Client: {field, size of business} What the client has already said: {their words in full} Deliver: 1. Eight questions about the business: who we sell to, how we differ, what has been tried, where this will live. 2. Three questions about taste that avoid the word "like": ask for two examples they admire and one that irritates them, and why. 3. Two questions about money and deadlines, phrased so the answer has to be a number. 4. One question the client will not expect but that saves you a week. 5. For each question, a line saying why you are asking, for your own eyes. Do not ask anything you can look up yourself: their site, their socials, their competitors.
Anything in curly braces is yours to replace.
Example output
Question: "Show me two sites you like and one that annoys you. What exactly in each?" Why: "modern" means something different to everyone, a screenshot does not. Question: "Who in your company says the final yes?" Why: if it is not the person you are talking to, you get two rounds of revisions instead of one.
